WORTHING OVER 60's
Worthing Tournament 18/08/25
The tournament was divided into four leagues, the winners of each progressed to a semi-final and, if successful, to the final.
At the last minute a new rule was introduced where 4 rule violations of any kind resulted in a penalty to the opposition. There were a lot of penalties awarded.....
Wanderers
The Wanderers were in the same league as the Strollers, along with Worthing Blue and Bognor Boulders.
We faced Worthing Blue in the first match. Both teams had to adjust quickly to the newly introduced "penalty for four team violations" initiative. We were slower to adjust and Worthing were awarded the first penalty, freshly despatched past Steve Makin. Our turn soon followed and Wanderers scored the penalty to even the score and earn a 1-1 draw.
Our second match was against the Strollers. Although both teams were in it for spells, Wanderers finishing proved the difference. Pete McArthur scored on his tournament debut and Ian Humphrey finished off a fine team move. Number three, yet another penalty
We knew going into our final match against Bognor that we needed to win by three goals. We duly did so courtesy of another goal by Ian Humphrey, a smart finish by Steve Innes and, yes you guessed it, another penalty.
Wanderers won their league on goal difference to progress to the semi-final where we faced Godalming. Wanderers were outplayed from the start. The 6-0 result was somewhat flattering. Enough said.
The Wanderers team: Steve Makin (gkp), Tony McMahon, Shaun Moloney, Steve Innes, Pete McArthur, Ian Humphrey.
Strollers
It was a tough day at the office for the Strollers, who could only field 6 players, 3 of whom were over 70!
A reasonable start in the first games. Losing only to a penalty when we had already missed one of our own.
Things didn't go as well against our club mates in the Wanderers who had a good 3-0 win but with another missed penalty by the Strollers
In the final game, there was a 4-0 defeat to Worthing Blue but (you've guessed it) there was another missed penalty for the strollers.
Throughout, our star was Steve Fordham in goal, especially in the last game when he to make many strong saves.
Team: Steve Fordham(GK), Ian Humble, Paul French, Geoff Cooper, Gordon More and Colin Case.
Special mention to Ray Aylmore who subbed for both Wanderers and Strollers
