Strollers slightly disappointed

Squad: Steve Makin, Gordon More, Paul French, Steve Marshall, Paul Regan, Gok Kemal, Geoff Cooper

In today's second round of League 2 matches, Strollers began in second place only one point behind the leaders, Portsmouth. Strollers always experience player availability churn each month so new starters today were Paul Regan, Gordon More and Steve Makin. With matches played at hourly intervals, Strollers lost their first game 2-0 against Bognor Reserves with concentration awry as Bognor's usual mischief maker cast his evil spell. A 0-0 draw against Arun Green failed to reward Strollers dominance. The best result of the day was a 1-0 win against Portsmouth with Geoff Cooper converting a penalty having been denied a goal scoring opportunity; Strollers defended resiliently to secure a win. Sickener of the day was a 1-0 defeat to Hurst Whites. Although both sides were evenly matched, an unmarked Hurst forward powered in a long drive seconds before the final whistle Strollers remain in second place but are now 4 points behind Portsmouth with one more round to go. There was no lack of effort or unity, but we've probably learnt some salutary lessons to take into the next round in July.

Strollers Over 60s tournament

Squad: Bob C, Paul F, Colin P, Gok, Steve M, Geoff C, Ray

Strollers travelled to Lancing on Monday to play in the first of 3 rounds of fixtures in the basement league. As Hurst Blue were unable to field a side we were required to play just 3 matches of 25 minutes duration. First up were Bognor Reserves and despite creating several chances victory was only achieved courtesy of Gok's emphatic finish. Stollers continued to play some good stuff in the next game against Arun Green and a comfortable 3-1 victory was secured through well taken goals from Steve M (1) and Geoff (2) with their consolation goal being one of the few opportunities afforded them thanks to some solid defending throughout by Paul. In the final fixture, a scrappy affair, fatigue set in with injuries having prevented a couple of the squad from playingmuch football in the preceeding weeks and Pompey NSG secured a 1-0 victory. In all a very satisfactory morning's work with a lot of good football being played through the midfield in which Colin P was very steady throughout and helped in part by 'keeper Bob's excellent distribution from the back.

League Match Horsham 0 vs 1 Varndenians. Last game of the season

Our team: Steve Fordham (gkp), Tony McMahon, Paul French, Shaun Moloney, Karen Dare, Graeme Walker, Mike Royce

We played our last league match of the season today against Varndenians. Our first ever league match was against the same team in October 2023. On that occasion we lost 7-1. We also lost 8-1 to them last season. So it is a mark of our progress that there was little to separate the two teams today. Although we lost 1-0, it could easily have gone our way if a couple of shots hadn't been saved by their keeper. At the end of the match one of their players came up to me afterwards to say "You lot have come a long way". Indeed we have. All the team played their part in a highly competitive game, but man of the match goes to Tony McMahon for his dogged marking of their star player. Mike Royce, making his debut up front, provided an excellent focal point for the attack and was unlucky not to score himself. Steve Fordham, as ever, was reliable in goal, and made at least one spectacular save. Thanks also to Steve Innes for his support on the day.

Over 60s tournament - Strollers April 13th

Squad - Steve Makin, Alan Finnan, Karen Dare, Colin Parker, Paul Regan & Steve Innes

It was the quarterly Plate competition this morning and Strollers were in a group with Worthing Blues, Bees, Penguins and Frimley. The sun was shining, there was no wind and it was a glorious morning for football. Unfortunately the same can’t be said of the results! The team played well - some great passing, movement, communication, long spells of possession, good chances but, alas, the ball just wouldn’t go into the net. At the other end we gave very few chances to the opposition but some went into the net. Four matches played - 0-0, 0-1, 0-2, 0-1. Lots to be proud of and to take forward into the next League campaign.

Cup Run Comes to an End 30th March

The squad: Steve Makin (gkp), Gordon More, Ray Aylmore, Mike Mighall, Shaun Moloney, Karen Dare, Shouv Ghosh

Horsham's run in the 60+ cup came to an end on Monday. Having received a bye in the first round, our second round tie saw us travelling to Eastbourne. The match also featured Shouv making his debut for the club having recently reached 60. The opening period was relatively even. Eastbourne clearly had a physical advantage as most of their players seemed well over six foot, with physiques to match. However, our passing game and general nippiness provided a counter. Unfortunately, a misplaced pass found their forward with sufficient time and space to slot home the opener. From that point on we were chasing the game and despite some good approach play, we struggled to create many clear chances. Predictably, our pressing led to a break-away opportunity for Eastbourne, leaving them 2-0 up at the break. We dominated possession in the second half which eventually led to a penalty. The spot kick beat the goalkeeper, but not the crossbar. We continued to press but with no reward, other than the comfort of knowing that we did our best. The match finished 2-0. TThe result of the match was a disappointment, but it was played in good spirit. The Eastbourne team and club were very welcoming with tea and coffee laid on afterwards. Some of the team were accompanied on the trip by their other-halves, and took the opportunity to explore Eastbourne and nearby attractions.

Over 70s Tournament April

Squad: Steve Fordham, Karen Dare, Caroline Baker, Trevor Tilley, Shaun Moloney, John Brotheridge, Ray Aylmore

Horsham travelled to Worthing yesterday for the second Over 70s Tournament of the year; not at the usual venue but at Palatine Park home of the 'other' Worthing FC. Several regulars were unavailable so the squad was a mix of some regular Wanderers and some regular Strollers. Drawn in a tough group consisting of Worthing Red, Kingston, Penguins and Portsmouth we played each once in games of 15 minutes duration. First up were Worthing Red which resulted in a very even game with few clear chances and with Worthing taking the points with the only goal of the game. Next came Portsmouth in which Horsham hit the inside of the post twice (seeing the ball rebound clear in both cases) and saw a penalty saved. The points were finally secured courtesy of a late strike from Shaun. Thirdly we faced national champions, Kingston, which resulted in a very creditable 0-0 scoreline achieved through some great 'keeping from Steve F and a solid defensive performance throughout the team accompanied by the occasional well worked attacking phases. The final opponents were Penguins and the points were eventually secured with another well taken finish by Shaun. All in all a very impressive performance with valuable contributions from the whole squad and plenty of good football played throughout.

Wanderers Benefit from Character Forming Lessons

Squad: Steve Fordham (gkp), Tony McMahon, Alan Finnan, Karen Dare, Chris Pennell, Ray Aylmore, Shaun Moloney

As today was the second Monday of the month, our two teams travelled to Lancing to play in the 60+ tournament. Paul French has reported on the Strollers' fortunes. It falls to me to do so for the Wanderers. It was Rudyard Kipling who suggested that Triumph and Disaster should be treated the same, as imposters. Well, we experienced triumph when we achieved promotion to the Premiership, so it guess it is only fair that disaster, at least in terms of results, should be testing us now. I can reliably report that it is doing so. Fresh from our unrewarding debut in May, when we only got one point by drawing with Dolphins, we hoped to improve on that performance today. However, despite battling performances, good teamwork and spells of promising interplay in all four matches, we came away empty handed. We scored early in our first match against Arun, only to see it chalked off for a foul by the defender on the goal scorer (me). (Note to referee: surely if an attacker is fouled in the process of scoring a goal, that must at least be considered a DOGSO?). Unfortunately, poor marking by me led to their only chance which they converted - a 1-0 loss. Godalming were our opponents in the second match. It was a relatively even contest until a speculative long shot deflected off Ray past Steve. Their second goal was a well worked move and gave them a 2-0 victory. Our match against Dolphins was a tight affair, settled when a misplaced pass by me allowed their goal-hanging forward plenty of time to slot past Steve. Neither team had any clear chances, either side of that game changer, so another 1-0 loss resulted. We held our own against Worthing Blacks for much of the last game. They went ahead by finding a forward with a quickly taken free kick. Their second came when two of our players collided and, with both on the ground, there was nothing to stop their oncoming attacker finding the net. Wanderers  A big thank you to Steve Innes for his support on the day. I'm off now to find a poem about a team that overhauls a 7 point deficit in the third leg of a three monthly league.

Lancing Tournament 11th May

Wanderers Back in the Premiership for next season

The squad: Steve Fordham (gkp), Tony McMahon, Alan Finnan, Karen Dare, Steve Innes, Shaun Moloney, Andy Overington

Horsham Wanderers returned to the Premiership at today's 60+ tournament in Worthing. It was no surprise that we faced a stiffer challenge than when we cruised to top position in the Championship in the previous three monthly cycle. It was heartening that although we didn't get much by way of results, we at least matched our four opponents in spirit and teamwork. Our first match was against Arun Whites and was an evenly matched affair, but our opponents won 1 - 0 by way of a speculative shot from out wide that bounced off Steve Fordham and into the net. Next up were Godalming. We again held our own for a period until a mix-up in marking allowed one of their players a free shot, which he gratefully dispatched for a goal. Their second goal in the 2-0 victory would have been disallowed if the referee had spotted that our defender was nudged away to create space for a shot. Our third match was against today's winning team: Worthing Black. The 3-0 score line flattered them somewhat. We were outgunned but not outclassed. The final match saw us compete successfully for a 0-0 draw against Brighton Dolphins.

Battling Draw Earned Against Hurst Blues May 1st

The team: Steve Makin (gkp), Colin Parker, Ian Humphrey, Karen Dare, Shaun Moloney, Dom Gorton.

We travelled to the ARC at Burgess Hill on Friday to play our 60+ league match against Hurst Blues. The Blues, who are the stronger of the two Hurst teams, had posted some good results recently and had a full complement of eight players. By contrast, we only had a bare six players, and were without some of our regulars. To add to our challenge, it remained hot throughout the match. However, the team rose to the occasion, played tight in defence and created opportunities to score. When the defence was breached, Steve Makin was on hand to make some great saves, including one with his face. The 0-0 result was fitting reward for our hard work and discipline.

Monday 27th April

Squad: Ray, Karen, Ian Humphrey, Tony, Mike, Andy O, Graeme

A good performance, where we dominated possession (keeping the ball well), had many more chances, shots and corners, but in the all important stat were beaten on goals. We had good opportunities to score in both halves (including a penalty) but could not find the back of the net, which sadly Hurst managed with their only two chances. Major thanks to Ray for stepping in at the last minute, and to Andy O and Mike for sharing the goalkeeping duties. Great to see Gok as our lone supporter.....who will also make his "comeback" in Fridays match at Hurst (The Arc). Finally thanks to Simon Clark who was excellent as referee.

Over 60 tournament Wanders April 13th

Squad: Steve Fordham (gkp), Ian Humphrey, Graeme Walker, Andy Overington, Chris Pennell, Dom Gorton. Largely unused sub: Shaun Moloney.

It was a tournament of two halves for the Wanderers. We won our first two games 1 - 0 but lost our second two, also 1 - 0. The first was against pre-tournament favourites Godalming. The match was relatively even for the first 10 minutes, with both teams having spells of possession. Then Dom broke the deadlock with a cracking shot from 15 yards which their keeper "failed to see coming", or words to that effect. Godalming pressed hard for the remaining five minutes but we held out for a 1-0 victory. In the next match against Hurst Blue, a precise pass from Chris found Andy and his volley found the net to reward our dominance. Only towards the end did Hurst have much success, but Steve was on hand to make a fantastic save and to secure another 1-0 victory. From that high point we dropped away in our third match against Dolphins. We failed to get going properly and were punished when the ball deflected wildly off Ian past Steve to put us behind. It looked like we might get something from a penalty, but Dom's spot kick was pushed onto the post and swept up by their relieved keeper. We needed a least a draw from our last game against Portsmouth, but went behind within 30 seconds when a long range shot snuck past Steve into the corner. Though we didn't get the result we needed from the match, our performance was markedly better with good passing moves and strong defending throughout. The matches provided a good foretaste of what we will face in the Premiership in May. Let's hope we play to the level we showed in three of our four matches today.

Hat Trick Hero Misses Sitters in Horsham Victory (Graeme is missing from the picture above )

Squad. Steve Makin (gkp), Tony McMahon, Ray Aylmore, Karen Dare, Graeme Walker, Shaun Moloney, Dom Gorton

Horsham Walking Football Club's academy finally paid dividends when young Dom Gorton, notched a hat trick in the 3-1 victory away to Worthing Blues today. The gloss on Dom's glory was somewhat tarnished by his failure to convert two sitters. The match, expertly refereed by our own Simon Clark, was a relatively even affair for the first ten minutes. Dom then struck his first from wide on the left to settle Horsham's nerves. His second followed after the third of three free kicks gave him sufficient time to slot home past the Blues' wall and keeper. We seemed to be cruising but after the break Blues pressed harder and eventually got one back when their midfielder's shot evaded my dangled foot and Steve Makin's lunge to nestle in the corner. Shortly afterwards, another effort from the same player hit the post. Steve made a couple of key saves before a delicate dink from me put Dom through for his hat trick, and put the game to bed. A great team performance, and a special mention to Ray Aylmore who didn't put a foot wrong in defence. Horsham's team:

Wanderers Reach the 70+ Final

The Wanderers squad: Steve Fordham (gkp), Paul French, Tony McMahon, Karen Dare, Shaun Moloney, Bob Charles, Steve Thompson

We entered two teams in today’s 70+ tournament at Worthing: Wanderers and Strollers. 10 teams entered the tournament and were divided into two leagues. The Wanderers were drawn in what looked like the easier of the two. Our first match was against Hurst Pretenders who struggled to cope with our game and conceded three goals: two from Steve Thompson and one from Tony McMahon venturing forward from defence. In our second match against Worthing Reds, we again dominated possession and went 2-0 up with goals from Steve Thompson and me. Reds pulled one back when a shot came off the post and unluckily rebounded into the goal off Steve Fordham. Despite my late absence due to a blue card, the team hung on for the 2-1 victory for which Paul French should take much credit for a very effective man-marking job on John Ling. We played some of our best football in the third game against Penguins: I smacked one home after a free kick pass from Steve Thompson and Tony McMahon rounded off a neat passing move with our second for 2-0 win. We had already qualified for the final by the time we played the fourth match. Arun Blue kept us out for much of the match until Tony McMahon scored the only goal to seal a 100% performance in the league. As expected, Kingston were our opponents in the final. Although they presented a strong challenge, the first half of the match was fairly even with each team dominating for periods. The match turned on an odd decision by the referee, who penalised Steve Fordham for what looked like a normal release of the ball, and Kingston scored from the resulting free kick. Kingston got a second when one of their players moved right across the pitch at a speed that appeared to be at least as fast as that which led to a formal warning for yours truly earlier in the match. Steve Thompson got us back in the match with a long range shot immediately afterwards, but Kingston ran out 2-1 winners.

Horsham Strollers Over 70s

Squad : Terry Jones made his debut , Caroline Baker, John Brotheridge, David Brunton, Colin Case and Ray Aylmore

The Strollers were placed in a tough group with Dolphins, Arun Blue, Kingston and Portsmouth, playing each team once in games of 14 minutes duration. They were very competitive in close games against Dolphins Arun Blue and Portsmouth losing 1-0 to a late penalty, a complete fluke and a speculative toe-poke respectively. They were no match, however, for the very strong Kingston side losing 5-0 despite a number of good saves from keeper Terry

60+ Walking Football Tournament

Wanderers Clinch Promotion to Premiership

Squad : Steve Fordham (gkp), Ian Humphrey, Tony McMahon, Alan Finnan, Chris Pennell, Karen Dare, Andy Overington.

They say that the final of EFL Championship play-offs is the most financially significant game in world football, with the winners making it into the promised land of TV money riches. The stakes weren't quite so high in the final round of the three-monthly Worthing league tournament, held today in Lancing. Horsham Wanderers had already all but secured promotion to the Premiership, but still needed to get over the line. The first match was a tense affair and despite playing some good football and dominating possession at times the team had to settle for a 0-0 draw against Hurst. Next up were bottom club Gosport, and in four minutes of what was our worst performance this year we gifted them a goal and nearly went two down, only to be retrieved by the referee disallowing the goal. Despite that let-off and some better play thereafter, we couldn't find the net and suffered our first loss and our first goal against of the three-month campaign. Worthing Whites were next, and proved to be a handful at times, though we gradually took control of the match and, if our shooting had matched our passing, would have won, but had to again settle for a 0-0 draw. The final match against Bognor followed a similar pattern: much good play, solid passing, strong defending but no end-product and another 0-0 draw. Despite a less gratifying final day, we still did enough to secure promotion to the Premiership. A big thank you to Alan Finnan for stepping in at the last moment when I failed a late fitness test.

9th March 2026

Over 60s Tournament - Strollers

Squad: Steve M, Paul F, Colin P, Steve I, Gok, Steve T, Ray A

The Strollers travelled to Lancing for the 3rd and final round of the monthly fixtures hoping to end a 12 game run without a win or even a goal. Both were achieved in the first game with a 1-0 win against Bognor for whom our very own Colin Case was again guesting in goal. The victory coming courtesy of a fine finish from Steve T. Two goalless draws then followed against Arun Green and Arun Blue. A fiercely struck penalty which struck the post being the nearest Strollers came to a goal. In the return fixtures Bognor claimed their revenge with a 1-0 victory after a rare breakdown in Stollers defensive organisation. There then followed a second victory with a 1-0 victory over Arun Green, the goal coming from a well struck penalty by Steve I - awarded for a dogso offence committed by Arun's robust and quite vocal female participant. Finally, in what was probably the best game of the morning, a further 0-0 scoreline against Arun Blue completed the morning's fixtures. Credit to the whole squad for some excellent performances throughout.

60+ Walking Football Tournament

Wanderers Repeat in February Tournament

The squad: Steve Fordham (gkp), Ian Humphrey, Shaun Moloney, Karen Dare, Graeme Walker, Chris Pennell, Andy Overington.

The second round of the 60+ winter league took place at Lancing today. After January's tournament, the Wanderers were lying first in the Championship on 10 points. Facing the same four teams we achieved the same set of results, three wins and a draw, to cement our place at the top of the table. Our squad featured six of the seven players from January, with the sole change being Andy coming in for Dom. Our first match was against second placed Hurst Pretenders, the only team that took a point from us in January. Andy was under instructions to be a nuisance, a ploy that eventually paid off when he fired home the winner from a rebound off the keeper. We faced Gosport in the second match and despite dominating possession, and probably leading all the other stats, we failed to break the deadlock and finished with a scoreless draw. Our third opponents, Worthing Whites, fielded a strong team and the match was fairly balanced. We got our passing game going nicely and Chris finished off one of series of such moves with fine strike into the corner to take the match 1-0. We took to the field again immediately against Bognor. We continued to pass well and to defend and attack as a team. Chris again scored the only goal with a slightly looping shot that deflected off a defender past their goalkeeper. Steve Fordham had a quiet morning, but when called upon he was flawless in goal.

The Squad: Steve M, Paul F, Colin P, Gordon M, Tony McM, Geoff C, Ray A

Unfortunately our hopes were soon dented as a very somewhat shambolic team performance gifted Bognor a comfortable 2-0 victory courtesy of two defensive lapses. A much better performance followed against Arun Green but luck was not on our side as we fell to a slightly controversial 1-0 defeat. There being some debate as to the validity of the goal as it appeared that the ball was on the line of Steve M's area when struck. The first two defeats were then followed by successive 0-0 draws against Arun Blue (twice), Bognor and Arun Green. In each of these games we were competitive and playing some good football without creating clear cut chances. The best chance coming in the second Bognor match when a game winning penalty was well saved by the Bognor 'keeper - our very own COLIN CASE. Colin very sportingly volunteering to play for Bognor throughout to complete their required complement of players.

Special mention to Steve M who made a number of good saves throughout the morning and had no chance with the goals that were conceded.

January 12th 2026

60+ Walking Football Tournament

Another year, another 60+ tournament on the South Coast. We fielded two teams in today's tournament at Lancing.

At the usual pre-match announcement we learned that there were now four leagues: Premiership, Championship, Division One and Division Two.

The Wanderers remained in the Championship while the Strollers played in Division Two.

The Wanderers played four matches, each of 15 minutes.

The squad was: Steve Fordham (gkp), Ian Humphrey, Shaun Moloney, Karen Dare, Graeme Walker, Chris Pennell and Dom Gorton.

This was Chris's first tournament for Horsham, following his transfer in the January window. Our first match was against Bognor. It was relatively even, though I felt we shaded possession and gave them few chances. It was settled in our favour with a strong left foot shot from Dom. Dom was on target again, this time with his right foot, in the second match against Worthing Whites and sealed our second 1-0 victory. Whites certainly had their chances but strong defending, including a really good save by Steve, kept them out. Dom treated the team to tea and coffee in the hour wait before the third game. Just to prove that such bribery gains no favours Dom was started on the bench for the Gosport match, and Graeme seized his chance of glory by slotting home the opener via a couple of deflections. Not to be outdone, Dom came on to score the second in our 2-0 victory. Steve only had one touch of the ball and was shivering with the cold by the time the final whistle blew. Our last match against Hurst Pretenders had few highlights and finished in a scoreless draw. This result left the Wanderers top of the Championship on 10 points, four clear of the second placed team, and with no goals conceded. A rewarding day all round.

December 2025

Walking Football Tournament

Wanderers in 70+ December Tournament

Horsham fielded two teams in today's 70+ tournament in Worthing: the Wanderers and the Strollers. This is the report for the Wanderers. Our teams were in separate groups. The Wanderers played four 14 minute games in group B, with the following outcomes:

Kingston Red 0 : 0 Wanderers

Arun Blue 0 : 1 Wanderers (Tony)

Worthing White 0 : 0 Wanderers

Brighton Dolphins 0 : 2

Wanderers (Shaun (pen), Shaun)

The team: Steve Fordham (gkp), Paul French, Tony McMahon, Karen Dare, Shaun Moloney, Bob Charles

As you can see from the results, we were unbeaten and conceded no goals. We matched Kingston Red in the first match, with Paul French keeping their England forward quiet. We should have scored a hat full against Arun, but their keeper keep out all but Tony's well worked goal. We dominated Whites, but again came up against a keeper that stopped everything. Only in our final match did we really do ourselves justice, finishing worthy 2-0 winners, after I added to the penalty with an easy tap in following Karen's "pass" via their keeper.

Battling Draw Earned Against Hurst Blues

The  Squad: Steve Makin (gkp), Colin Parker, Ian Humphrey, Karen Dare, Shaun Moloney, Dom Gorton

26th February - Worthing Red  V Wanderers League Match

Worthing 3 Horsham 0.

Squad: Steve M, Paul F, Tony McM, Graeme W, Ray A, Steve T, Colin P

Horsham Wanderers travelled to Worthing on Thursday to take on, probably, the strongest team in the league without several of their regular players. Worthing generally dominated possession but Horsham defended stoutly with Paul giving Worthing's prolific striker John Ling barely a sight of goal throughout. When Worthing did create an opportunity they found Steve in excellent form in goal. The deadlock was eventually broken when Worthing's most defensive player unleashed a screamer from distance, giving Steve no chance. So at half-time Horsham were 0-1 down and, encouraged by their first-half performance, continued to resist until the same player again found the net with another fierce shot. In the closing stages Horsham's only defensive lapse gifted Worthing the opportunity to grab a third leaving the final score  Horsham's

2/2/2026   Home v Worthing Whites 10.30  ko

Result in - 1-1

Squad: Steve Makin (gk), Shaun, Karen, Graeme, Ray, Steve Thompson, Ian Humphrey.

A close game, well refereed by Simon, with relatively few chances at either end finished with honours even. The first half saw us keep possession extremely well, but apart from a few long range efforts and a couple of half chances we did not really threaten. It looked like a goalless first half until shortly before half time a shot hit Steve Makin in the head, bounced back to their player, who prodded it home with Steve on the floor. Second half saw the same pattern with good possession, and we at last created a good chance for Graeme who was challenged from behind. Simon gave the penalty and a card for their player. Shaun then despatched the penalty to bring the scores level. The last few minutes again saw us have a couple of half chances, but the final whistle saw a fair result.

19/1/2026  Home v Hurst Blue   10.30 ko

Result in - 2-1

Squad: Steve M (gk), Shaun, Graeme, Karen, Tony, Steve T, Ian Humphrey.

The Wanderers continued their good form from last weeks tournament with a deserved win. After 5 minutes, referee Steve Tomlin (who had an excellent game) played a great advantage that saw Steve Thompson go clear and score at the second attempt. Both teams then had good possession, but good defending especially by Ian Humphrey, Shaun, Tony & Karen plus solid keeping by Steve Makin, meant Hurst did not look like scoring. Instead with a few minutes to half time, Graeme hit a great shot that the keeper saw spin off him and into the net. The second half was very even, with at times Wanderers playing excellent "keep ball" to frustrate Hurst. But with 5 minutes to go, Hurst scored from a free kick to make the last few minutes more "nervy" than they should have been. Final whistle saw a good 2-1 win with our next game in 2 weeks time at home to Worthing White.
